Designer BiographyI was born in 1954 in St.Louis, Missouri. I started designing furniture when I was nineteen years old. I was always sketching designs but didn't have the tools at the time to make anything. I told my friends I was moving to California to become a furniture designer, and they thought I was crazy.
Looking back, I learned a lot during that time, but it almost destroyed my goal. You see, I wasn't designing anything. I was copying pieces to fill the needs of decorators. I hated almost every second of it, and didn't know why. Finally after leaving the business for many years, I started designing my own pieces. 2004 was the beginning of a two year quest to create, "The Art of Mirrors". Over the years I realized I was always looking in magazines and seeing the same old style of framing on mirrors, and knew I could create a new style, a richer unique look. I also felt the need for much larger pieces. I've always believed there were new looks to be found, new beauty. I'm not interested in the flashy contemporary style, it may have its place but it doesn't capture the warmth and depth of older styles. I think it has more to do with the skill level of the old craftsman. I realize of course that's just my opinion. You can hang a large bright color on a wall, and momentarily it will entertain the eye, but its lack of depth will be its downfall, and over time it becomes uninteresting. A great design, sculpture, or painting will forever draw you in; it will never lose its beauty because of its depth. THE ART OF MIRRORS I PUSH DESIGN AND ENGINEERING TO ITS LIMITS TO CREATE EVERY NEW PIECE. ALL OF MY PIECES ARE ALTERABLE IN SIZE AND FINISH, AND CAN ALWAYS BE CUSTOM ORDERED. I PERSONALLY DESIGN, METICULOUSLY HANDCRAFT, AND HANG EVERY PIECE. -- Steven J. Fernandez
